Description

Andrzej Strumillo (1928-2020) Andrzej Strumillo was born in Vilnius in 1928. He graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 1950. His artistic practice encompassed painting, drawing, book illustration and graphic design, poster design, sculpture, exhibition design, stage design and photography. His works were exhibited around the world.
He taught painting and art history at several universities and travelled extensively throughout Asia. From 1982 to 1984, he headed the Graphic Design Studio of the United Nations in New York. He also designed and edited numerous publications.
He was actively involved in the protection of nature and Poland’s cultural heritage. He was awarded the titles of Honorary Citizen of Suwalki and Ambassador of the Culture of Podlasie. He received numerous awards, distinctions and decorations, including the Knight’s Cross, Officer’s Cross and Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, and the Gold Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
